The National Curriculum states that the purpose of Physical Education lessons is to ‘provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.’(Dept. for Education 2013). We aim to offer an enriching PE curriculum and a variety of extra-curricular activities to allow pupils to achieve that goal, but also to further it by providing ‘opportunities to compete in sport’ (Dept. for Education 2013). Throughout the school, children are provided with a specialist sports coach to assist not only their physical development, but also to assist and help to ‘embed values such as fairness and respect.’ (Dept. for Education 2013). These attributes are a necessity should children wish to further a sporting career in any discipline. Children in FACT schools achieve their expected two hours of physical activity a week through a varied, progressive and fun curriculum. PE lessons are inclusive and meet individual needs. PE lessons follow the guidance set out in the National Curriculum in England Framework Document (2013), supplemented by resources from our scheme of work.

From KS1, children are taught the aspect of fair play and taking turns. As children move through the school, this develops so the children learn good sportsmanship, team selection and handling the emotions associated with winning and losing. Our varied curriculum (provided by the PE coach and class teachers) gives all children a great opportunity to experience a wide range of sports and games – both individual and team pursuits. At the different developmental stages of the child’s learning, the curriculum is designed to offer increasingly challenging situations. Throughout Key Stage One, children focus on gross motor skills through activities such as running, jumping, throwing and catching. They also learn basic dance movements and gymnastic skills such as balance and coordination. Children in Year 2 take part in swimming lessons delivered by swimming instructors in a local pool.

In Key Stage Two the children progress into more competitive, organised sports where they also have the opportunities to evaluate. Children also learn tactical skills for attacking and defending in a range of sports and through the curriculum and guidance from adults are given opportunities to find sports and activities that they prefer.

Children are offered opportunities to participate in before and after school clubs which allow children to further develop skills and technique with other children sharing a similar interest. Our children are also regularly in attendance at sporting competitions within the trust and with other schools organised in conjunction with ‘Croydon Schools Sports Partnership’ or ‘Palace for Life’ foundation. This allows our able and talented pupils the opportunity to experience competing and develop their competitive skills.

Throughout the year, children have the opportunity to take part in whole-school sporting events such as sports day, Olympic day or World Cup day. We may have taster sessions for other sports such as skipping workshops or Harlequins rugby taster sessions.
